Veteran filmmaker Shyam Benegal, a recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, is a prolific Indian director and screenwriter known for creating a new genre in Indian cinema: the middle cinema. Benegal has also been awarded the Padmashri and Padmabhushan. He has represented India in several international film festivals including the Cannes Film Festival, the Berlin International Film Festival and the Moscow International Film Festival. Benegal is also a board member of Prasar Bharati.
